January 2011:

Welcome to 2011! The Xi Mu chapter sisters hope you had a wonderful holiday season and that your year has started successfully. On January 22, Xi Mu participated in our first community service event of the year, which was a county-wide park cleanup. We spent a brisk morning and afternoon at Lake Lotus Park in Maitland, Florida riding the park ground of invasive air potato plants that can overrun the land if not maintained. The park rangers shared interesting information about the native and non-native plants growing in the park. After our sisters crowned Soror Saldamando as the collector of the most plants, we made our way to a private location for our monthly chapter meeting. At chapter we updated our calendar and planned events for the next few months, so stay tuned!

November:

The women of Xi Mu started the month by letting their voices be heard by voting in the midterm elections on November 2. Though their political viewpoints may vary, each sister made a pledge to vote and have a say in the election of their state and local leaders, as well as in the issues up for vote. Later in the moth the chapter sisters gathered at Gift of Grace Church, where Soror Kalloo’s father is the pastor. The women’s ministry hosted a brunch on November 13, at which the sisters volunteered. That evening, Soror Saldamando hosted a ONE Love wine social for the sisters. Each sister brought a wine of their choice as well as information about the wine. The wine was paired with a variety of delicious food and dessert for enjoyment. Next month we are looking forward to our annual winter date social!

October:

Each year the Xi Mu and Alpha Alpha chapters collaborate to organize and participate in an event together. This year we gathered at The Elephant Bar near Mall of Millenia for dinner and girl talk on the evening of Friday October 22. The next morning we revisited Give Kids The World, a village that helps grant the wishes of children with terminal illnesses and their families. The beautiful ladies of the chapters gave of their time to serve breakfast to guests of the village. Later that afternoon the Xi Mu chapter hosted another successful informal interest meeting, which was open to any graduate and/or professional woman in the Central Florida region. For more information about our upcoming events for aspirants, e-mail our Membership Chair- Nicole Henry- at tnx_ximu@yahoo.com.

Welcome to Central Florida and Xi Mu- Soror Elena Saldamando (Lambda alumna)!

September:

The highlight of September certainly was Convention 2010, but we managed to stay busy in our local community throughout the month! On September 3rd chapter sisters, family and friends of Soror Kalloo gathered to celebrate her birthday to the sultry sounds of Caribbean tunes at Bob Marley's in City Walk at Universal Studios. What a perfect way to enjoy a warm summer evening in Florida! Community Service for September was held on the 18th at the Suncoast Haven Rescue Mission in Pinellas Park near the Tampa area. While at the facility the sisters, cleaned, organized, and prepared food for distribution to homeless individuals in the local community. During the following weekend (September 25), the Xi Mu sisters gathered again at the new home of Soror Kalloo in south Orlando for a ONE Love afternoon! The sisterly love continued into the evening at the birthday celebration for Soror Albarracin at sleek and delicious Ravenous Pig: An American Gastropub! We are looking forward to October and our event collaboration with the Alpha Alpha chapter! Stay tuned!

August:

August marks the close of summer and beginning of the school year and Fall semester. On August 20, the Xi Mu Chapter continued our efforts to raise money for our national philanthropy Girls For A Change by hosting another happy hour event at Ember, located in downtown Orlando. Yet again the friends and family members of the chapter sisters came out to support the cause by making a cash donation for entry. In return they received specials on food and beverage, as well as raffle prices! We thank our friends at Ember for collaborating with us in support of Girls For A Change. On the morning following our fundraiser we participated in the Back to School Block Party at the Margaret Square community in Winter Park. Each year sponsors from agencies throughout Orange County donate school supplies, food, and raffle items for the needy children and families in the community. This year a local radio station provided entertainment and prizes as well. The Xi Mu ladies helped where needed throughout the event and completed cleanup duty. The altruistic sisters spent the rest of their afternoon at chapter meeting at El Bodegon, a local restaurante de españa, enjoying tapas-style dinning and preparing for convention in Los Angeles! We look forward to seeing our sisters at our annual convention in just under 2 weeks!

July:

Even with the busy summer months upon us, the ladies of Xi Mu still manage to spend quality time upholding our tenets through various events. On July 3, sisters from the Xi Mu and Alpha Alpha Chapters joined Soror Gina Bethel in celebrating her birthday by enjoying dinner and dancing in Winter Park.  Our latest book chat was held on July 24 in downtown Orlando. The chapter sisters and friends read and had an intense discussion about A Disobedient Girl by Sri Lankan author Ru Freeman. Because of the success of our book chats, we look forward to hosting many more in the near future. We remind our sisters and friends who may make their way to the Central Florida sun this summer to be sure to e-mail the Xi Mu sisters: tnx_ximu@yahoo.com.

June:

Summer is officially here! The ladies of Xi Mu are enjoying the warm weather and leisure! On June 11, an informal night out turned into a gathering of sisters in Central Florida from far and wide, bringing together alumnae and undergraduates of both Alpha Alpha and Lambda Chapters. That was an easy and fun way to celebrate our tenet of sisterhood! On Saturday of the next week the sisters and friends of the chapter woke up to a ballet workout at the Center for Contemporary Dance in Winter Park. After the great exercise and stretching, the group headed over to the Children's Home Society to mentor and read to children who are victims of abuse or come from unstable households. Our time spent truly made a difference in the children's day and ours as well. The next day, former Xi Mu Chapter sister LaTasha Murray happily married longtime sweetheart Joshua Golden at their "golden" themed ceremony in Celebration, Florida. Sorors Nichole O'Neill, Annette Kalloo, and Gina Bethel were in attendance to celebrate Tasha and Josh's big day and wish them nothing but marital bliss! If June is any indication of the summer to come, we happily embrace it! Be sure to e-mail the Xi Mu sisters if your summer travels bring you to Central Florida: tnx_ximu@yahoo.com.

May:

The highlight event for the Xi Mu ladies this month was our Gather For a Cause fundraiser evening on May 21 at Ember located in Downtown Orlando. The event was our first at this specific venue and it was a huge success! Our friends at Ember were very gracious and supportive of our fundraising efforts which supported Girls For a Change. We look forward to other event opportunities at this venue in the future. On May 22 we participated in a community service event to benefit victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. The event allowed sisters to sort clothes and supplies to be sent to Haiti as a way to give back to our worldwide community.

April:

Community service for April was held at Margaret Square Community in Maitland. Every few months the community invites our chapter sisters back to help at their Community Block Parties. This most recent block party provided educational, health, and financial education to the residents of the low- income community, as well as various supplies and goodies to accompany the free lunch. Our sisters were there to lend a helping hand wherever they were needed. Spring is officially here! With the arrival of the season known for beauty and growth, Theta Nu Xi celebrated 13 years of sisterhood and diversity on April 11! The sisters of Central Florida celebrated at a private dinner and sisterhood social. Each year our private dinner ceremony provides us with the chance to reconnect with our reasons for becoming a sister of the organization that we hold so dear. On April 24, Soror Kalloo invited sisters to attend the Pearl's Night Out woman's/mother's event at her church in Poinciana. Those in attendance enjoyed a delicious West Indian meal, music entertainment and all sorts of free goodies and giveaways! As a chapter we are excited to move into May with plans for a Girls for a Change fundraiser... details to come!

March:

This month the ladies of Xi Mu participated in International Badge Day on March 1 by wearing our pins or letters in some form throughout the day. We celebrated the day by keeping our organization close to our hearts at work, home, and play. For more information visit the National Panhellenic Conference's Badge Day page. The highlight of this month was the emergence for the chapter's second line "Operation 24"- Spring 2010! The event was held at the beautiful Samba Room in Dr Phillips, where we had the revelation of the new members then a private dinner party for the sisters, family, friends, and other guests. Congratulations to  #1 Sol- Christaly Albarracin and #2 Luna- Anjeli Singh!

February:

Xi Mu’s February ONE Love night took place on the 5th at Soror Kalloo’s home where the chapter had dinner, played games, and watched movies. It was a delightful night and a chance for the chapter sisters from both Tampa and Orlando to get together. Sisters of Theta Nu Xi strongly believe that a Theta Woman can do anything. The chapter definitely proved that at their rock wall climbing event on March 6th. We enjoyed an amazing afternoon of testing our strength and agility while scaling rock walls at Aiguille in Longwood.  On February 20 the chapter gathered for a book chat based on the book “Whiteness Just Isn’t What it Used to Be: Changing Racial Identity in South Africa”. The book was quite interesting and the sisters had a worthy and thought-provoking discussion over coffee and candy.

January 2010:

Happy 2010! Xi Mu continues to make big moves in the New Year and started it out with our 4th Annual White Hot Winter in Tampa. Fun was had by all who joined us for a ladies’ night out and we look forward to next year’s White Hot plans! On the 14th sisters and friends spent the evening wine tasting at the trendy and luxurious Wine Room on Park Avenue. The wine and cheese was delightful, as was the company and conversation! During the last weekend of the month, Xi Mu trekked two hours to Gainesville to visit the Absolutely Astonishing sisters of the Alpha Alpha Chapter! Over 20 sisters were present for the afternoon of bonding and reconnecting. As we say- Ahoy matey!

Welcome to the Xi Mu Chapter- Soror Nicole Henry (Eta alumna)!

Welcome to Central Florida- Soror Melanie (Padilla) Loberto (Lambda alumna)!

December 2009:

To wrap up a busy and successful 2009 the Xi Mu Chapter spent the 5th of the month taking the challenge to "workout like a dancer" at the Center for Contemporary Dance in Winter Park. That morning the sisters and friends tendú-ed, frappé-ed, and jeté-ed themselves into a sweat! Having fun during exercise made it feel less like a workout! Later that day the sisters made holiday cards for our troops serving the USA overseas. It is our hope that our handmade cards will bring a smile to the face of a member of our armed services! Xi Mu would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season, a prosperous new year, as well as best wishes to the graduates of Fall 2009!

November 2009:

This month the planning of the 4th Annual White Hot Winter began! Click here for our save-the-date announcement and check back soon for details on Xi Mu’s annual winter social. On the 6th sisters of the chapter and their friends met a Chili’s for a start-of-weekend mixer and the following Friday they ice skated (and occasionally fell!) at the Ice Den of RDV Sportsplex in Maitland. Xi Mu’s community service event of the month was with their friends and kiddies at Margaret Square Community in Winter Park for their Fall Block party. The sisters helped with set up, organization, and execution of the event, as well as clean up. Sisters spent the weekend of November 21 in Tampa enjoying a beachside chapter meeting and a night downtown as a sisterhood social. Continuing with the theme of family time for Thanksgiving the chapter hosted a Chomp or Chop game watching social for sisters and their family’s at Soror Annette Kalloo’s home on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Anyone who knows about football in Florida knows that the FSU-UF game gets UGLY! Fun was had by all, especially the sisters and family members cheering for the University of Florida who won with a 37-10 victory. Better luck next year Seminoles!

October 2009:

Xi Mu sisters along with family and friends celebrated Soror Gina Bethel’s engagement to her boyfriend of two years at their engagement party on October 9! The night was a festive and memorable way to congratulate the happy couple. On October 17 the sisters and friends of the chapter enjoyed a ONE Love night of dinner and laughs at Brio in the Mall at Millenia. The following weekend Xi Mu got lost! To celebrate the arrival of autumn the sisters and guests visited the Zellwood Annual Corn Maze. For the afternoon the group ate pumpkin and corn in every form, played in a wind tunnel, and found their way out of a maze shaped like the sun and clouds cut in a field of corn! Such a beautiful way to spend a sunny afternoon.

September 2009:

This month started with the celebration of Soror Annette Kalloo’s birthday at a fun downtown Orlando restaurant. The guests included friends, sorority sisters, and blood sisters. Sorors Kalloo and Bethel proudly represented Xi Mu at National Convention in Philadelphia! They can both agree that it was a motivating and rejuvenating weekend with beautiful sisters from all over the nation! The chapter humbly received an award for outstanding cultural diversity hours amongst GAP chapters. On September 16th and 25th the chapter hosted events for friends and interested women. Both nights were a success and allowed time for relaxing socializing and bonding amongst those present. The last weekend of September was spent celebrating the graduation of Soror Kalloo from the University of Phoenix with her Masters degree! She walked across the stage and accepted her degree in the presence of colleagues, sisters, and family members. She then hosted a ONE Love night at her home to put the cherry on top of a joyous month for Xi Mu!

August 2009:

Busy times as the summer came to a close! Our Walk in the Park picnic was a great success, bringing out sisters and friends of the chapter for a leisurely day of sunshine, food, and good conversation at Lake Lily Park of Maitland on August 15. Later that day members of the chapter helped Soror Tatiana Burgo (Lambda alumna) and LeToya Stairs (Lambda alumna/Xi Mu) celebrate their college graduation and relocation to South Florida, respectively. On August 22 the chapter assisted at a Back-To-School Block Party. The event gave residents of The Meadows (a low-income, high risk community located near Winter Park) an opportunity to come together as a community and gave them an opportunity to learn more about the Community Service Center of Central Florida, where the event was held. This was a wonderful chance for our group to revisit some of our kiddies to whom we taught dance and step to during the summer of 2007!

July 2009:

On July 25 the chapter hosted Caribbean Escape at Bob Marley’s in City Walk of Universal Studios. There was delicious food and sumptuous tropical beverages! A fun and festive time was has by sisters as well as their guests. The evening gave all present a chance to drift away to the sights and sounds of a Jamaican paradise!

Welcome to Central Florida- Sorors Nicole Setticase (Lambda alumna) and Cristina Segredo (Lambda alumna)!

Xi Mu’s 3rd Annual White Hot Winter

December 2008:

Checkmate. Newly elect Community Service chair Soror Kisha Howard made sure to find a fun and unique service event for this month! The chapter assisted the event coordinator of the K-12 US Chess Federation Tournament throughout a day-long chess event for grade school children. The event was held at the scenic Coronado Springs Resort Hotel at Walt Disney World.

With winter holidays around the corner the Xi Mu sisters set aside time for our Holiday Social tradition. This year the chapter opted to host the event as a dinner- and- movie date function at Bongo’s Cuban Café located in Downtown Disney. Thank you to our “Theta Boos” for joining the chapter in continuing this tradition!

November 2008:

On November 16 Xi Mu reached a major milestone by hosting its first new member emergence! Kisha Howard (#1-Sunrise-Fall 2008) celebrated her journey into TNX at Salsa Restaurant in Orlando in the presence of her family, friends, and fellow Theta Women. The chapter wishes her heartfelt congratulations!

Poinciana Elementary got a serving of diversity at its annual Multicultural Fair on November 1. Organized and hosted by Soror Annette Kalloo and fellow Poinciana Elementary teachers, this event allowed sisters to interact with the school’s students and make sure the fair ran smoothly. Annette found this day personally rewarding—a chance to turn her place of work into a place to play for the day!
