Still no cool weather for us in Central Florida but that doesn't put a damper on our Fall fun! On November 2, the chapter celebrated the marriage of Soror Anjeli to her husband Wil in Tampa, Florida! It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed being by her side during such a special event! During the weekend of November 16, several Xi Mu sisters attended the emergence of our newest sisters in the Alpha Alpha Chapter! The girls did a fabulous job during their presentation to the campus of the University of Florida. We are thrilled to welcome them to our sisterhood! Our service event for November took place on November 22 when we collected items for a Thankgiving basket to give to several local familieis who could not afford to provide a Thankgiving dinner. We were honored to deliver the baskets to the families in need. On November 23, we held our annual Fall Festival which included a day at the corn maze and a bonfire at night! This event is always a highlight and this year was no different! Thank you toall the sisters, friends, and family that made our Fall Festival so enjoyable!
This month marks the beginning of fall fun events for the Xi Mu Chapter! On October 5, the chapter members gathered at Crane's Roost Park for chapter photographs. You can check them out here! Our community service event for October was held on October 12, at which chapter members helped beautify the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford. We cleaned guest areas for several hours then enjoyed the remainder of the afternoon checking out the animals! At the end October, sisters traveled to South Florida for the bachelorette party of Soror Anjeli. Her wedding will take place in early November and we can't wait to celebrate with her!
September brought tough days for Theta Nu Xi as members coped with the passing of our sister Edrecelia Colomer. The memberhship was able to ban together to raise over $10,000 to cover the costs of our beloved sister's funeral expenses. Memorials were held all over the country on September 9 to honor her line number of 9. We continue to keep Edrecelia's family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.
The month of August took the sisters of Xi Mu on many journeys-- Italy, South, Africa, Brazil, Miami, Tallahassee-- for both work and leisure. For four of the sister, Boston was their destination and National Convention was their purpose! Christaly, Gina, Lizzie, and Shirley represented the chapter well and accepted several awards on our behalf, including GAP Chapter of the Year! We are so proud of each chapter member and their contributions toward making the chapter phenomenal. On August 31, we held our social activity and community service. Our social involved doing hair and makeup for our participation as volunteers at the Adult Prom benefiting B.A.S.E. Camp, a children's cancer support group in the Central Florida area. The entire evening was a blast and we were glad to give our time to a worthy cause. Next month we will be holding our Fall Semester Kickoff BBQ, winery tour social, and taking a day trip to visit our sisters in Tampa!
Who doesn't love summertime in Florida?! Between pool days and lunches in the summer breeze, Xi Mu managed to get a lot accomplished! On July 20, the chapter hosted a membership informational at Orlando Day Nursery. The group received a tour of the facility by our own Soror Charee Williams, who sits on the board of the organization. The informational had a fantastic turnout, and we look forward to sharing more about our sisterhood with the women who have shown interest in becoming members. Later that afternoon. we held our chapter meeting for July and prepared for our annual Convention (August 9-11 in Boston). To close out July, the chapter headed to the beach! We spent the weekend of July 25-28 at a beach condo in New Smyrna Beach. Our activities included sunning, playing games, swimming, barbecuing, dancing, and relaxing! It was a great way for the chapter to bond! We're excited for four of our chapter sisters - Christaly, Gina, Lizzie, and Shirley - to represent us at Convention 2013! Good luck!
With June came long days and nights for Xi Mu! We enjoyed a month full of fun sister dates within the chapter, including volunteering to care for shelter cats, evening meetups for frozen yogurt, and afternoon bike rides. On June 29, the sisters and friends gathered at Uno Chicago Pizza on International Drive to conclude our week-long doughraiser benefiting Girls For A Change. Uno allows supporters of a charitable group to donate a percentage of their bill to the cause. We are thankful for our friends and supporters for meeting us at Uno to give to our philanthropy! Later that evening, we gathered at a Mediterranean restaurant then Blue Martini for Soror Gina's birthday celebration! The belly dancing was enjoyed by all! Xi Mu is anticipating our Beach Weekend Retreat and informational meeting next month!
This month was busy as sisters wrapped up professional projects and personal community initiatives. Between travel and overtime at work, the chapter did set aside time for sisterhood and community service. On May 18, the sisters and friends gathered at soror Arlene's house for a celebration of the birthdays of Arlene and Esmeralda. We hope they enjoyed their special day! Later in the month, Xi Mu got down and dirty at Superhero Scramble, which benefits real life superheros such as police, military men and women, and fire rescue personnel. Our group of 11 volunteers helped at the registration table, bag check, and on the individual obstacle course events. After our volunteer shift, several sisters participated in the race! Great photos of that day are posted on our Facebook page! To close out the month, the sisters gathered for our monthly chapter meeting then spent the rest of the day at brunch and at soror Gina's house playing games! It's been a fun month for us and we're looking forward to our big summer event- a week-long fundraiser for Girls For A Change!
Spring is in the air! As usual, our favorite day of April is the 11th, on which we celebrate our national founder's day! The chapter sisters gathered at soror Arlene's house for the private ritual then an international wine and cheese social to commemorate our beloved Theta Nu Xi's Sweet Sixteen! Read more about it in our national blog Flutters and Flights. The following weekend, Xi Mu had the honor of hosting the Southeast Regional Conference in Orlando, Florida. After many months of planning, the regional officers and the sisters of Xi Mu watched our work come to fruition. The conference was a total success! One of the highlights was Xi Mu's recognition for overall excellence int he region! It was a fitting reward for all of the effort that goes in to the business of running a successful chapter. To conclude the month, Xi Mu participated in a community service activity at the local Ronald McDonald House, during which they cooked a delicious brunch for the children and their families that temporarily reside at the home while their children undergo treatments at the nearby hospital. Later that day, former Xi Mu sister Nicole H married her best friend in a beautiful ceremony in Richmond, Virginia! Congratulations Nicole and Steve! Stay tuned for next month's adventures, including Superhero Scramble on May 25, by liking us on Facebook!
Early in March, we joined with the organizations in the National Panhellenic Conference for International Badge Day. Each year on this day, members of sororities promise to wear their organization's badge as a sign of solidarity. On March 4, the sisters of Xi Mu and all of Theta Nu Xi participated and wore our seal pins close to our hearts to show our love for our sisterhood. You can find pictures submitted by our sisters by visiting our national Twitter page! On March 9, the chapter celebrated the birthday of Soror Elena at a resort in Orlando. We enjoyed poolside games and outdoor events with Elena's family and friends from all over Florida! In the very early hours of March 16, the chapter sisters traveled from Orlando to Lakeland for a community service project called Paint Your Heart Out in which we joined a group of volunteers to assist an elderly man by repainting the exterior of his home. It was a rewarding and fun experience for our chapter and we were grateful for the opportunity to join forces with the charity and its sponsors! Later that evening, the chapter held an ice cream social at Downtown Disney for our Meetup group members! We enjoyed sweet treats at the world-renowned Ghirardelli then divided into two teams for a Disney-themed photo scavenger hunt! It was a fun evening, with a touch of friendly competition! We are looking forward to warmer days and many outdoor events this Spring!
We moved in to the second month of 2013 with much momentum and energy! Of course our favorite part of February was the emergence of our newest sisters on February 1 (see Special Announcement below)! On February 10, we celebrated Valentine's Day early with our Love and Sushi event at Soror Gina's house. Several members of our Meetup group came to the event to join us in making sushi and Valentine's cards for local hospital patients. It was an interactive evening that allowed us to talk and catch up while doing something to benefit our community (and our stomachs!). In an effort to stay conncted to the local youth, Xi Mu attended the 8th Annual Step Off!, which invites elementary, middle, and high school groups to compete in a step competition. The Orlando Public Library hosts this event in the soing each year. It was blast to see young students entertain the crowd with their skills! The Xi Mu members enjoyed meeting some of the groups and their coaches after the show.
On February 1, we hosted the emergence for our long-awaited Fall 2012 line- Folie a Deux! The event was held at Pasha Tavern and Lounge in Millenia then we moved over to Club 23 in Downtown Orlando. The occasion was also a celebration for Soror Anjeli, whose birthday was on February 2! Welcome Shirley and Lizzie; happy birthday to Anjeli!
We have started off 2013 in a great way! On January 26, Xi Mu had our Spring 2013 kickoff at Annie's Bar and Restaurant in Downtown Orlando. During the evening, we held chapter meeting and spent quality time with the chapter members and greet our new GAP sisters. We are happy to welcome Soror Michelle S. (Alpha Alpha alumna) to Xi Mu!
Xi Mu continues to wish you the best for this coming year and always! On January 26 we will have our first chapter meeting of 2013 and our Spring 2013 kickoff event! We are looking forward to welcoming new local alumnae to Xi Mu. On February 1 we will welcome the newest line to Xi Mu! Join us for their emergence at Pasha Tavern and Lounge at 6:30pm.
Our White Hot Winter Social was held on December 21 at Soror Juanita's home. It was a very chilly evening, so the chapter sisters bundled up with blankets and hot chocolate and spent some quality time chatting around the fire! We also had a gift exchange to show our appreciation for one another. It was a great way to close out 2012 and look forward to 2013! Thank you to all of our sisters, family members, and friends for your support. Happy New Year!
For Xi Mu, "November" means "fun with family and friends"! On November 17, we held our annual Fall Family Festival. We began at Long and Scott Farms where our group enjoyed the corn maze, tree maze, and tasty food provided by local vendors. From there we moved on to Soror Juanita's home, where we played our favorite outdoor games and held a bonfire well into the early morning hours! We were so pleased with the turnout of the event! It was truly a day with sisters, family, and friends. The following weekend was the much-anticipated Chomp or Chop Game Watching Social at Soror Gina's house, which celebrates the rivalry between Florida State University and University of Florida. Most of our alumnae chapter members hail from one of these universities, so the social can get very competitive! We raffled several items and the proceeds went toward our national philanthropy Girls For A Change. There were some friendly wagers made throughout the night, but in the end, the Florida Gator fans celebrated the victory of their team! Check out photos from these events on our Facebook page.
With October comes cooler temperatures (even in Florida!) and family/friends time. Stay tuned for details about our Fall Family Festival on November 17!
This month gave the sisters of Xi Mu the opportunity to get to know more personally women who are interested in joining our organization. We hosted an informal interest meeting at the Microsoft Store followed by a food crawl on Restaurant Row on September 8. The interest meeting was open to the public and allowed sisters to share information about Theta Nu Xi. The food crawl was a fun and delicious way to spend the afternoon! During the following week, the chapter hosted several events related to our tenets, such as a discussion about feminism (scholarship) and a lifestyles workshop (leadership). We are looking forward to Autumn and some of our favorite fall traditions!
